SSSD Celebrates CASBO Summit Award Winner Kristi Bertron

The Colorado Association of School Business Officials (CASBO) has named Kristi Bertron and the Steamboat Springs School District (SSSD) team as this year’s Summit Award recipients! The Summit Award recognizes exceptional innovation, vision, and teamwork among school business professionals.

Bertron, SSSD's Student Data Technician for Exceptional Student Services and Medicaid Coordinator, was also formally honored at a recent Board of Education meeting for leading the district's award-winning Medicaid Reimbursement for Student Health Services Implementation Initiative.

The initiative established a sustainable funding source by integrating Medicaid billing into daily health service workflows. By training 95% of eligible service providers and standardizing electronic documentation, the project is projected to generate $180,000 in annual revenue for the district. Most importantly, these recovered funds will directly benefit local students by retaining a Bilingual Family Liaison, funding an additional school nurse, and supporting long-term mental health resources.

The recognition was presented at the CASBO Fall Conference in Vail during the Tuesday morning breakfast announcements, and as part of the award, the district is donating $1,000 to a local school or foundation of its choice.

Thank you, Kristi, and congratulations to the entire team for leading the way in fiscal innovation and student care!
